I love your list, Sue. I don’t even know most of your people. Now I get to introduce myself to them. (Except David Bowie. I know David Bowie. He almost made my list as well.)

I realize some of these are also on your list, but they absolutely needed to make my list too:
Joni Mitchell
W. Kamau Bell
Otis Redding
Paul Simon
Bill Bryson
David Sedaris
Olive Ann Burns
Wanda Sykes
Billie Holiday

Oops, forgot Dave Eggers

Joni just missed my cut-off. And, YES, Wanda Sykes. I has some imaginary criteria about having to feel like I know their entire body of work before I could include them. Now you have some more people for me to research.

I’ve got:
Arundhati Roy
Ryan Adams
Terry Gross
Ira Glass
Sam Cooke
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Barbara Kingsolver
Ray LaMontagne
St. Sophia
Those three lions who guarded the girl in Ethiopia*

*I can use lions, right? The list is not just people?

I left Barbara Kingsolver off only because I have struggled with her last couple of books. But the love for her I felt when I first read Pigs in Heaven was pretty extreme. Yes, Ira Glass. I almost listed Terry Gross, but then I thought how much I love Fresh Air even when someone else is doing the interview – maybe it is her entire team.
What lions??? I think I need to go google.

Lions! http://www.nbcnews.com/id/8305836/ns/world_news-africa/t/ethiopian-girl-reportedly-guarded-lions/#.UYFPJCs__Ro

I haven’t loved all of Babs’ (I’ve read Poisonwood Bible so many times I feel I can call her that) work, but I love where she’s coming from. And honestly, Poisonwood Bible was *the* book for me, the one that validated so much of what I’d thought about the Christian faith, but never been allowed to question while growing up. It was like she wrote what I was thinking, and it somehow allowed me to still believe in God while having all the big questions I had (er, have).

Also, I agree about loving Fresh Air even when someone else is doing the interviews, but there’s just something about Terry Gross’s voice and speaking style that makes me feel at home.

Howard Stern? Really? Some of these others I have never heard of. I am going to look them up. They better not all be chicken farmers.

Yes, I like Howard Stern. I lived in NYC for ten years and listened faithfully to him and to so much talk radio. Coming from Illinois I had never been exposed to such fabulous radio. And Howard is multi-faceted despite what many people think of him. His interviews are the best.

Wangari Maathai – I need to read more about that incredible woman. I have friends who worship Edward Abbey, I think I need to revisit. I love that your grandmother made the list.
